Now the dust has begun (and I mean only just begun) to settle, I thought I would give you a quick update on what has been happening over the past few weeks.
First however, I want to reiterate my heartfelt thanks for send me to this incredible place that is our Parliament. It really is a privilege to be here and I will never forget the trust that people have put in me.
So now to work. As you will be only too aware, whilst locally and across Essex we had some fantastic results, unfortunately those were not replicated across the country - we simply did not quite win enough seats to cross the finishing line on our own.
Therefore, of all the options available to us, the coalition with the Lib Dems seemed to offer the best hope for a strong and stable Government and the opportunity to put into action many of the pledges we made during the election.
The coalition document is a comprehensive summary of the plans that have been drawn up and I hope that on reading it (see link to pdf at foot) you will agree that it covers many of the areas we campaigned on.
We face extraordinary challenges but I think that many now believe that the coalition is the best way to face up to those, and to begin to unravel the mess that the Labour Government has left us with. We have already seen signs of this with the first £6.1bn of savings that have been found, and what I believe to be a tough but fair budget.
On a local level I need to ensure that I don't loose touch with those who sent me here and so I am planning regular campaign sessions. I plan to be out knocking on doors to tell everyone exactly how we plan to fix our broken country. These may be difficult times but they are also exciting times and I believe it is vitally important that EVERYONE understands and feels involved in how we put the Great back into Great Britain.
Finally, if you wish to contact me on any matter at any time please feel free to do so - my details are next to this letter.
My grateful thanks once again to all of you and I look forward to seeing you out and about.
Best wishes

Stephen Metcalfe, newly elected MP for South Basildon & East Thurrock asks first question of Parliament.
Having won the Parliamentary Ballot to ask the first question of the new Parliament Stephen Metcalfe, used the opportunity in front of a packed House to ask the Secretary of State for International Development, Andrew Mitchell, for assurances that his department would be seeking better value for money under this Government than under the last.
Stephen said: “While I accept that International Development is not necessarily the most burning issue in South Basildon & East Thurrock, I do know that my constituents are concerned about value for money and I want to make sure that the new coalition Government is spending their hard earned taxes wisely.”
“That is why I took the first opportunity I had to seek assurances that this Government would put value for money and the elimination of waste at the heart of everything it does.”
“We know we face some tough financial choices in the future, but I do want to ensure that what we do spend is spent cautiously.”
“The Secretary of State was able to provide those assurance and said that while meeting our moral obligation to help those less well off that ourselves he would ensure that money was targeted where it was most needed.”

The theme of Carers Week is ‘A Life of My Own’ with calls for greater understanding and support for the army of carers who provide vital care for their families, friends and communities. In doing so, many sacrifice much in their own lives, unable to do the little things that most of us take for granted. All too often, these unsung heroes also suffer ill health. Read More>>

Each year the Carnival Association works very hard raising money for charity as the Carnival Court goes round the South East supporting various carnivals during the summer collecting funds.
This year the money raised went to two excellent local charities. First, Holiday Homes for the Handicapped, received £800 which they said would go a little way to making up the short fall in funds the charity has following the fire at its fundraising shop earlier in the year. Second, The Stanford-le-Hope & Corringham Community First Responder Group received a cheque for £750. Read More>>>

Labour have failed to get a grip on immigration
Damian Green has accused the Government of allowing immigration to run "out of control" following new evidence published by the Home Office.
The Shadow Immigration Minister was commenting on figures that lay bare the extent to which the Labour Government has failed to get a grip on the level of immigration in the UK.
The Home Office figures show more student visas being issued than ever and visas, settlements and EU benefit claims all up. New asylum statistics also reveal that there are more asylum seekers arriving in Britain than failed asylum seekers leaving.
Damian said these immigration figures, the last to be published before a General Election make it clear that immigration "has been running out of control throughout the lifetime of this Government", and he added: "Even in a recession with more than two million unemployed the number of work visas issued is going up. So much for British jobs for British workers."

Free Bus Pass Assurance from Stephen Metcalfe
Stephen Metcalfe, prospective Conservative MP for South Basildon & East Thurrock has today take the opportunity to reassure residents about the future of their free bus pass.
Stephen said: “There has been a lot of scaremongering recently about what a Conservative Government may or may not do. I can categorically state that the Conservatives have NO plans to scrap the free bus pass scheme in the same way we have NO plans to scrap SureStart, Winter Fuel Allowance, Cold Weather Payments or the free TV Licence for the over 75s.
“One of the key features of the forthcoming election is going to be honesty. People need to know which party will look them in the eye and tell it like it is. Trying to frighten people by telling them things that are not true is no way to go about getting some respect back into politics and dispelling the myth that all politicians are untrustworthy.
“That’s why we need a change of Government and new leadership for the country. We just can’t go on like this any longer.”

Unemployment figures get cautious welcome from Stephen Metcalfe
Commenting on yesterday’s unemployment figures, Stephen Metcalfe, prospective Conservative MP for South Basildon & East Thurrock said: “Any fall in the level of unemployment is welcome news. But yesterday’s figures are still a real cause for concern. Economic inactivity has hit a record high and there are 2.3 million people out there, out of work and who want a job, but aren’t included in the unemployment figures. We still have a long way to go to undo the damage done by Labour’s recession.
“Making comparisons with previous recessions does not make it any easier for those who have lost their jobs this time round. Nor is it any comfort for the thousands of people working in the private sector who have been asked to take pay cuts and go onto short time working, none of whom are counted in the published figures.
“We have set out a bold plan to Get Britain Working again including 400,000 extra apprenticeships and training places for young people over the next two years, to ensure that a generation is not written off in this recession. We will also create a big, bold and simple National Loan Guarantee Scheme to help get credit flowing and save jobs and tax breaks for companies which create new jobs, and cuts in National Insurance and Corporation Tax for all small companies.”

Conservative say never again will a Government betray its people over Europe.
Now the Lisbon Treaty has now been signed by President Klaus and will shortly become part of EU law, coming into force on 1 December. This is a situation which has been brought about by the Labour Party (aided by the Lib Dems), who could have instigated a referendum at any time prior to the Treaty’s ratification. Given this situation, we have announced a series of measures, which are summarised below and for which we will seek a mandate at the next general election. The measures are essentially in three areas:
1. ‘Never Again’ unilateral measures which we can take ourselves • An Irish style ‘referendum lock’ on any treaty handing over further powers from Britain to the EU. We will amend the 1972 European Communities Act so that any future treaty which transfers competences (powers) from Britain to the EU would have to be subject to a referendum, as is already effectively the case in Ireland. We will campaign on challenging our opponents to confirm that they will never seek to overturn this.
• A legal lock ensuring a referendum if any British government tries to take Britain into the Euro. We are pledged never to take Britain into the Euro. But to prevent any future British Government from trying to do so without a referendum, we will amend the 1972 Act to provide that safeguard too.
• A United Kingdom Sovereignty Bill, to ensure the ultimate sovereignty of the UK Parliament. Unlike many other European countries, Britain does not have a written constitution. Given the increasing amount of EU law with which we have to deal, we would amend the law to insert a sovereignty clause to make it explicit that, ultimately, Britain’s Parliament is sovereign and cannot be overruled by the EU against its will. This is similar in principle to the situation in Germany whereby the German Constitution (the Basic Law) is ultimately supreme. This would not mean striking down individual items of EU legislation but would provide ultimate constitutional safeguards against any attempts by EU judges to erode our sovereignty. Read More>>>
