Stephen Metcalfe angry at MP’s arrogance
Government denies EU Treaty Referendum
Stephen Metcalfe, Prospective Conservative MP for South Basildon & East Thurrock this morning expressed sadness and disappointment that the current Basildon MP has failed to listen to her voters and ignored their demands for a referendum on the new EU treaty.
Last night, in the House of Commons by voting against holding a referendum, Angela Smith MP failed to do what the vast majority of people want.
An amendment, put forward by the Conservatives, was designed to allow the British people to have the final say before more powers are given over to faceless bureaucrats in Brussels.
Stephen said: "The EU "Reform Treaty" is the European Constitution by another name and takes forward the process of European integration, transferring more powers from our nation to Brussels."
“As William Hague, Shadow Foreign Secretary has said, ‘this is a matter of Trust’, Mr Brown promised us a referendum in his 2005 Manifesto and has blatantly failed to live up to that promise.”
“It just shows how out of touch the Government is and how the public are held in such low regard by this arrogant and discredited Government. Despite what Mr Brown says, we know that the new EU treaty is the same as the now dead EU constitution in all but name. Mr Brown, we are not fools. You promised to listen to the people and you have ignored us.”
Stephen added: “I would have thought that anyone who represents the people of this area, and has listened to them on the door step, would have wanted to make sure our views were heard. It is a shame that our currently elected representative in Parliament does not feel the same. Otherwise, I am sure she would have backed the campaign for a referendum and voted in favour of the amendment, as some of her colleagues did.”
