Anger at Housing Betrayal

Stephen Metcalfe, Prospective Conservative Member of Parliament for South Basildon and East Thurrock, has expressed anger at the Government's decision to divert money away from much needed housing improvements here in Basildon.

In an announcement from John Healey, the Housing Minister it is now clear that the Government has changed its mind about helping the people of Basildon access decent homes and has redirected the promised money to other projects.

Stephen said: “This is a real slap in the face for the residents of Basildon. For years residents have been promised urgently needed improvements to our housing stock and now the Government has crushed those dreams with the stroke of a pen.”

“The Council has done its bit and has worked hard with St George's Community Housing to gain the two stars needed to access the funds, only to be told not to bother.”

“The millions of pounds that we have all been waiting for have been snatched off the table leaving everyone bemused and angry at the arrogance and betrayal of this Government. “

“I will be writing to Grant Shapps MP, Shadow Housing Minister to ask if there is anything to be done to reverse this decision and get the money back to Basildon.”

“I just hope that our current MP will do all she can to remedy this situation and will use her new ministerial position and close connections with Gordon Brown to help the residents of Basildon.”
