Conservatives Plan of Action
As Mr Brown jets off to Portugal Stephen Metcalfe, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for South Basildon and East Thurrock together with Geoffrey Van Orden MEP, John Baron MP and Conservatives across Essex are calling upon the Government to honour is commitment to the British People and give them a say in whether Britain should adopt the new EU Treaty.
Gordon Brown promised a referendum on any EU Constitution at the last election. The EU Treaty is basically the EU Constitution in all but name. European leaders have admitted that it is 90 to 99 per cent the same. Gordon Brown must therefore agree to hold a referendum.
Gordon Brown pledged to be a servant of the people and to listen. If he, like us, really believes in giving power to the people, he must let the people have the final say.
That is why Stephen and Conservative across Essex are holding an Action Day on Saturday 20th October to highlight the issue.
Stephen Said, “ We are asking people to sign a petition and a pledge card demanding that the Government honour its commitment to the people and give them a Referendum on this very important issue.”
"Gordon Brown promised us a referendum so where is it? I am very unhappy that that we are being denied our democratic right."
“The campaign for a referendum is supported by people from all parties - in fact more than eight out of ten of Labours own voters want a referendum. We cannot sit back and watch our sovereignty disappearing through the actions of this Labour Government.”
He Continued, “I hope people agree that we must not see more power given to Brussels without us having a say. I hope people will join our campaign. We will be in Basildon Town Centre from 10.30am onwards on Saturday 20th October asking people to sign our petition. We will also be delivering leaflets and pledge cards asking people to e-mail or post their support for our campaign to us.”
He finished, “We will then collate all the pledges from across Essex and present them to the Prime Minister.”
NOTE: If you don't get an opportunity to sign our paper petition you can always e-mail your support to stephen@vote4metcalfe.com. Please include your name, address, and the phrase "I want a Referendum"
