Future MP’s back Council’s opposition to increased Traveller sites. Stephen Metcalfe & Jackie Doyle-Price, Prospective Conservative Members of Parliament for South Basildon & East Thurrock and Thurrock respectively have backed Thurrock Councils opposition to the Governments attempt to double the number of gypsy and traveller pitches and to build a gypsy transit camp in Thurrock. Stephen Metcalfe said: “Jackie and I fully back the decision taken by Thurrock Council’s Cabinet on Wednesday.” “It makes a mockery of local democracy when the Government or their unelected and unaccountable quangos can simple ignore the will of democratically elected Councillors and the residents they represent.” “Local Councils must have control of planning decisions like this so they can provide places that suit the local community rather than top down Government targets that ride roughshod and ignore local circumstances.” Jackie Doyle- added: "This Labour Government has no business ordering Thurrock to double the number of pitches or to accept the transit camp." "Both Conservative controlled Basildon and Southend Councils are considering legal challenges to the pitch allocations. Thurrock Council should do the same" Posted 21/5/09 |

Stephen said: “Gordon Brown is yesterday’s man, whether as Prime Minister or as Chancellor, Gordon Brown has been determined to ignore simple economics. During his tenure he has raided our pensions, doubled the tax take, sold our gold off cheap, overseen huge rises in food, fuel and energy prices, declared an end to boom and bust, seen our debt grow out of control and spent more than we have earned.” Read More>> Posted11/5/09 |
