Stephen Metcalfe MP hosts local Scouts group in Parliament

Stephen Metcalfe, Member of Parliament for South Basildon and East Thurrock today welcomed Rob Groves and the 1st Thors Oak Scout group to Parliament for a tour of the estate.

Stephen said “The scouting movement which is over 100 years old is a fantastic organisation which teaches young people vital skills and self discipline. It also provides them with opportunities to take part in activities that they would otherwise be unlikely to take part in such as canoeing or climbing. I would encourage any young person to join the Scouting movement or a similar group not only to make new friends but to give themselves a head start in life.

It’s great to see young people taking an interest in politics and democracy. Often young people are seen as apathetic when it comes to politics but from my experience, it just comes down to engaging with them, I often find young people have fantastic ideas and a fresh perspective and remind me of when I first got involved in politics at a young age. I hope that this project and the trip to Parliament reinforces these young peoples’ interest in politics and that one day they become involved locally, perhaps as Councillors or even the Members of Parliament of tomorrow.”here
