Don't dump on Basildon? Stephen Metcalfe, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for South Basildon & East Thurrock has expressed deep concern over the proposed construction of a Waste Processing Plant in Courtauld Road. The proposal, put forward by Essex County Council, is in response to the Government’s demand that we recycle more of our rubbish and bury less of our waste in landfill sites. As a county, Essex is rapidly running out of landfill, with most landfill sites being full within the next few years. The proposed plant will process the waste and minimise the amount sent to landfill. Concerns expressed range from issues surrounding the siting of the plant and the potential impact on the local environment to how the many lorries bringing in the rubbish will access the plant. Stephen said, “There is no doubt we have a problem, we have to find a way of striking the right balance between our needs as residents and the needs on the Council and the County Council to recycle more and divert waste away from landfill. What I am concerned about is that whatever happens, local residents’ concerns are listened to and wherever possible accommodated. We have to work together to find solutions that will suit us all.” He continued, “The cost of Waste Management is rising and how we dispose of our rubbish is a big concern. I am very keen to hear as many views as possible on this important issue and would like residents to tell me what they think.” Stephen can be emailed at stephen@vote4metcalfe.com. |
